The Amarnath Yatra is an annual pilgrimage to the shrine of lord Amarnath in the greater Himalayas in Kashmir. This temple is located at a height of 13,000 feet, hence high altitude illnesses and effects of extreme cold are very common here. These conditions are cause of quite a few numbers of deaths during the Yatra. In the year 1996, about 200 pilgrims died due to hypothermia due to extreme cold here. The high death toll was primarily because of poor infrastructure, and although a lot of improvement has been seen in the infrastructure here, there were an estimated 50 deaths during the Amarnath Yatra of 2010. Therefore it is important to be aware of this fact so that precautions against these conditions are taken.
The following precautions will help one safely do the Yatra:-
· Wear proper clothes. It gets very cold here and even on a bright sunny day the weather can suddenly pack up and start snowing. Therefore carry enough warm clothes. It is preferable to keep a pair of gloves handy.
· This Yatra involves trekking over long distances in mountainous terrain. Hence physical fitness is an important. Before embarking on this Yatra practice walking for at least six km every day for two to three weeks. Deep breathing exercises will also help
· If you suffer from high blood pressure, lung diseases, cardiac disease or seizures it is advisable to seek the opinion of your doctor proceeding to Amarnath. Hypertension is known to get aggravated in high altitude and hence individual suffering from this condition should regularly take medicines even during the Yatra.
· If any individual experiences chest tightness, cough, breathlessness, dizziness, inability to walk, or expectoration of pink frothy sputum during the Yatra, they must seek immediate medical assistance (Medical assistance is available at all army and Paramilitary camps along the route). These are serious symptoms and yatris should not proceed further.
· Since the trek is quite difficult, especially through the northern route, it is better to carry minimum luggage. The following items should be carried as they can be of great help: Torch with extra batteries, match box, a few bars of chocolate, water, a pair of gloves, a walking stick, goggles, a change of dress.
· It is strictly advisable not to smoke or consume alcohol here. Alcohol can lead to loss of body heat and this may lead to hypothermia. Similarly smoking can predispose to development of ling edema in high altitude and hence should be strictly avoided.
By following these precautions one can minimise the chances of health problems while at Amarnath.

Amarnath Yatra is a pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave located on mount Amarnath In Kashmir. It is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the Hindu trinities. It is believed that Lord Shiva imparted the secret of immortality to Parvathi, his consort here. Legend has it that pair of pigeons also heard the story and hence has become immortal. A couple of pigeons can be seen here even today.
Every year, more than a million people make this journey of faith. The Amarnath Yatra is organised in the month of June/July and usually ends by mid august; hence this temple is open for a very short time of the year. This year the Yatra will commence on 29 June 2011 and end on 13 Aug 2011.
This Yatra is conducted by the J&K govt and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board which is headed by a senior officer of the Govt under the chairmanship of the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir.
Registration of yatris for the Yatra is mandatory. This enables proper planning and utilisation of resources. The route of the Yatra is extremely hazardous and passes through high mountains. Hence to control crows, only a specific number of people are allowed on the route at a time. The entry is primarily controlled at Baltal, where the northern route begins.
Registration also helps to locate lost people, and it also helps the officials identify the person in case of death (many deaths have happed in Amarnath; in 1996 nearly 200 pilgrims died due to inclement weather and last year nearly 50 yatris died due to various causes).
Apart from these benefits, all registered yatris are insured for a sum of Rs One lac, in event of death.
Jammu & Kashmir bank is the nodal agency appointed by J&K govt for registration of yatris. The bank charges a nominal Rs 15/- for the registration. Registration of yatris can be done at any of the designated branches of J&K bank. One can also provisionally register for the Yatra online. These provisional registration slips can be validated at special counters set up in Jammu and Srinagar. Read the rest of this entry »
